Site Preparation
Prior to drilling, the work area undergoes preparation: vegetation is cleared, topsoil removed, and the ground leveled. This creates a safe and functional workspace for both equipment and crew.
Selection Of Drill Rig
For open-pit water well drilling, the choice of rig depends on factors such as well depth, hole diameter, geological conditions, and required construction efficiency. The two main types are tracked (crawler) water well drilling rigs and tyre-mounted (wheeled) water well drilling rigs.
Drilling Process
Rig setup: The rig base is fixed, vertical alignment is adjusted, and the power system (diesel engine or electric motor) is connected.
Drilling preparation: A drill bit (alloy, PDC, or other type based on rock formation) is installed, and the rod length is calibrated.
Drilling operation:
Rotary drilling: Power is transmitted through the drill rod, rotating the bit to break rock.
Impact drilling: Percussive force drives the bit through hard formations (e.g., using an air hammer bit).
Cuttings removal: If the rig uses a circulation system, cuttings are cleared. Mud pump injects drilling mud into the borehole, carrying cuttings back to the surface while stabilizing the hole wall.
Sampling and logging: Cuttings samples are taken at various depths to identify aquifer locations. Logging tools check hole wall integrity and groundwater distribution.
Monitoring and control: Parameters such as drilling pressure, rotation speed, and mud flow are monitored in real time. Operations are adjusted to prevent stuck pipes or hole collapse.
Completion And Wellbore Stabilization
Casing: A water filter pipe (e.g., a bridge filter screen) is placed in the target aquifer section to block mud and sand entry.
Cementing: Cement slurry is injected into the annulus between the casing and borehole wall to secure the casing and seal off contamination.
Well washing: High-pressure water flushes the filter pipe, opening pores in the aquifer and boosting water yield.
