Reverse circulation (RC) drilling is a drilling method that uses dual-wall drill rods, consisting of an outer drill rod and an inner tube. These hollow inner tubes allow cuttings to flow continuously and steadily back to the surface. Unlike diamond drilling, RC drilling produces cuttings samples rather than core samples. The drilling principle involves a pneumatic hammer driving a tungsten carbide bit to break the rock. This repeatedly striking action is called the hammer—a pneumatic reciprocating piston that drives the tungsten carbide bit used to fragment hard rock. When compressed air is blown out, the pressure differential creates a reverse circulation, causing the cuttings to move upward into the inner tube. Once the cuttings reach the surface, they pass through a hose to a cyclone for sample splitting. The sample then drops through an opening at the bottom into sample bags. These sample bags are labeled with the collection location and depth, and can be directly transported to a laboratory for analysis.
